Al-Haq expresses its deep disappointment over the presidency’s disregard to the civil society demands to not amend the Judicial Authority Law, emphasizing the gravity and negative implications the promulgation of the recent laws by decrees has over the Palestinian political system as a whole.

On 13 March 2020, Al-Haq sent a letter to the President expressing its position rejecting the amendment of the Judicial Authority Law No. 1 of 2002 and the continuation of the Executive Authority’s approach interfering in judicial affairs. Al-Haq called for respecting the independence of the judiciary, the principle of the rule of law and the constitutional principles enshrined in the Palestinian Basic Law. It reaffirmed the priority for establishing a permanent High Judicial Council in accordance with the currently enforced Judicial Authority Law, without introducing amendment to it. In its letter, Al-Haq also called the Presidency to hold serious consultations based on an inclusive approach, to improve the reality of the Palestinian judiciary. The President’s receival of Al-Haq’s letter was confirmed by the Prime Minister and several officials.
