As an organisation dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Al-Haq is reiterating its firm belief that the promotion of international law is the essential framework for the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people, and the only basis for a just and sustainable resolution

to the conflict.In light of the questions that have arisen in the context of the prospective Palestinian initiatives at the United Nations (UN), Al-Haq has drafted a legal brief, which, by adhering to a strict application of international law and contemporary legal practice, intends to clarify some of the legal issues at stake. The paper addresses four main issues: (i) Palestine’s September initiatives; (ii) Palestine’s statehood status in international law; (iii) the procedure for admission as a Member State of the UN; and (iv) the potential implications of these initiatives.
